JVC turns on the first 720p billboard in Times Square

Engadget December 3, 2008 4:32 PM
Is bigger always better? JVC's new LED display in Times Square doesn't have the size of Walgreens or Toshiba (and lets be real, no one is touching Dubai) but it is the first one in proper 720p (1280x720) resolution, no scaling or head tilting necessary here. After calling the crossroads of the world home since 1979, the new improved board lit up yesterday at 19 x 34-feet, capable of displaying 60fps with a mere 8mm pixel pitch ensuring things look good even close up. You can thank the same Clear Channel Spectacolor and D3 LED folks that were behind...

Old Music: Van Halen: "Hot For Teacher" (vocal track) [Stream]

Pitchfork: Today December 3, 2008 4:25 PM
Well, here's a nice way to bookend 2008. In January, we pointed to an mp3 of David Lee Roth's vocal track from "Running With the Devil", unearthed by the always mischievous Chunklet. We've been enjoying that one all year. And now Chunklet have posted a stream of Diamond Dave (with vocal support from Eddie) making his way through 1984's "Hot For Teacher". Lots of reverb on his voice this time, and there's not as much ad-libbing, but still worth it to hear those feral yelps in their naked glory. Maybe someday we'll get some video from the sessions too. (via...

Top Labels of 2008: Slumberland Records

The Allmusic Blog December 3, 2008 3:59 PM
Since slowly getting back into the record game a couple years ago, Slumberland seems to have been loading up for a huge display of fireworks in 2008. The years spent in inactivity haven’t dulled their knack for finding great pop bands and putting out great records, one after another. The Lodger - Life is Sweet The Lodger’s debut album, Grown-Ups, was a fine slice of indie pop that called to mind stellar groups like Orange Juice, the Wedding Present, and Heavenly, while making a case that they might someday be mentioned in that same class. Fleetwood Mac To Get Unleashed On 2009 Tour, Re-Release Rumours

stereogum December 3, 2008 3:32 PM
Between Lindsey Buckingham solo shots, Vampire Weekend and Death Cab covers, and constantly finding excuses to spin Tusk and Rumours and etc., Fleetwood Mac is one of those "classic" bands that never seem to grow old. Unless you see them in person, because [SPOILER ALERT] they don't look like that pic anymore. Next year you'll be able to pair their timeless material with their timebound bodies: the Mac have promised new tunes, but their upcoming greatest hits tour, called Unleashed, is all about the old. For this first Fleetwood trek in five years, the group promise setlists featuring "all the...

Why am I still watching My Own Worst Enemy?

TV Squad December 3, 2008 3:09 PM
Filed under: Other Drama Shows, OpEd, Reality-FreeThis has nothing to do with the quality of the show. I like it. But I'm wondering why I keep watching it week after week when NBC has already canceled it.It's not the first time that I've watched a TV show that has been canceled. And I think that fans should keep watching the remaining episodes of a TV show that has been canceled, out of loyalty if nothing else. Now, indulge me for a moment as I share a funny little video about Prop 8. (For those of you in the closet, thats the proposition to reverse the law that allows gay marriage in California) I know its more of a political thing and I have strong feelings AGAINST using a movie blog to talk about politics, but this topic has been brought up in dozens of live shows. ‘Flintstones’ Musical May Throw Broadway a Bone

Vulture -- New York Mag December 3, 2008 12:00 PM
We've been kind of worried about the future of Broadway lately — what with the closings announced like every other day — but fear not, theatergoers! Just as we always expected, the entertainment industry may be saved by cavemen. (Sadly, not these.) According to reports, writer Marco Pennette — who is also doing some stuff we are less excited about — is near a deal to write the book for a Flintstones musical!Says Variety: "Pennette's script will rely on contemporary issues: Wilma, for example, mulls leaving Fred because he still acts too much like a caveman and hasn't adapted to...

Pitchfork.tv: Sin Fang Bous: "Advent In Ives Garden" [Video Premiere]

Pitchfork: Today December 3, 2008 11:30 AM
Sin Fang Bous is the solo project of Icelander Sindri Mar Sigfusson, who's also in the band Seabear. Both projects make their home on Berlin's Morr label, and they share the welcoming, melodic, post-Postal Service electro-pop sound that's become the label's bread and butter. "Advent in Ives Garden" combines spiky 8-bit digital squelches, strummed acoustic guitar, rapidly chanted verses, and an ethereal chorus hook into a busy, constantly changing tune. The track's animated video takes a similarly kitchen-sink approach, taking rough, street-art style drawings of everything under the sun and rapidly moving them around the space in time with the...
